Above 21, the Palm

With an unparalleled view over the skyscrapers in JBR, it’s peculiar to have a place like the cigar lounge Above 21 being totally empty the few times I’ve visited - for sure it could have something to do with the fact that I’ve only visited the 14th floor, which apparently is members only (no one told me it was members only - so apparently I look like a member). If going here, opt for the public bar on the 13th floor, in order to get any buzz at all. The cocktails are all decent and the selection of cigars is fair, as is the range of whisky offered - but the place needs guests, and a proper playlist (stop playing the generic anonymous pop and go oldskool instead) in order to find themselves anywhere closer to the top than they are. Having said that though, and to be fair - they are niched as a cigar lounge, not cocktail bar.

Go here to enjoy a solemn cigar and contemplate life looking out over JBR, but don’t expect the wow factor to present itself other than regarding the views and the cigars.

Atmosphere: 4/8
A small cigar lounge with a fantastic view over JBR.

Cocktails: 5/8
Cocktails done right, but there’s not a lot of creativity involved.

Bartenders: 4/8
Decent bartenders that unfortunately don’t have a lot to do at work.

Ice: 4/8
Small ice cubes but at least lots of them.
