AYA, City Walk

Hidden away in the fine-dining courtyard just off the main strolling boulevard in City Walk is AYA, one of the newest additions to chef Izu Ani’s restaurant empire. Focusing on the Asian (predominantly Japanese) cuisine, it’s wearing off on the cocktails as well, and as the rest of his establishments, quality is a key factor in AYA. The interior is exquisite, the staff is well-trained (to say the least - their sommelier is one of the best so far in UAE) and the food excellent. A bit more focus on the cocktails combined with more creative freedom for the staff (in writing the menu, for example) would let them go to the next level. .

Enjoy the wizardry of Izu Ani and let yourself get lost in the excellent wines, before taking on the cocktail list.

Atmosphere: 6/8
There’s a somewhat serene tranquility about this place - no one is rushing, a quiet murmur is heard from the restaurant, and the staff seems to have all the time in the world for discussions about glass manufacturers, Sake or the perfect ice knife.

Cocktails: 5/8
True to their theme, they serve Asian versions of the classics - what is missing for the true top grades is a brief description; how many knows what Umeshu, Shiso or Sake does to a well-known cocktail? Albeit that the bartender may tell you, but it would be nice to be able to glance through the menu and trying to decide by yourself - otherwise, why have a menu?

Bartenders: 6/8
A great cicerone through the menu and keen to impart the thoughts behind each and every cocktail, as well as willing to provide small samples of obscure alcohols, when needed.

Ice: 7/8
Big, clear ice cubes - only thing missing is the ice stamp and the block of ice for the true craftsmanship.
