Flashback, Business Bay

With an entrance hidden away in a bookshelf just off the main lobby in the Paramount Hotel, this place has a lot of things talking for it already from the start. The bar is dimly lit, almost a bit too dark, while the tables are bright as if in the limelight - other way around would be better for seeing what you drink and socializing at the tables. According to the bartender, they’re still waiting for some of the liquor, and while that may be so - it’s still a bit strange to open a place, give a printed menu to the guests and first when the order comes, tell the guests that half of the cocktails are not available.

With more bottles behind the bar, a bit of clever thinking regarding the lighting and staying true to their concept - this place could progress a lot further. Time will tell how they succeed.

Atmosphere: 6/8
This place ticks a lot of boxes for the speakeasy category, but at this stage they fall short on the finishing touches.

Cocktails: 5/8

Ordinary cocktails with few twists, but hey - every great journey starts with a single step.

Bartenders: 5/8

An eager bartender that is aching for customers - calm down and listen to the gusts and it’ll all be ok.

Ice: 4/8
Not sure as to whether the speakeasy bars in the good ‘ol days had big ice cubes, but probably - given they likely got their ice from ice blocks saved from the winters. Ergo; go for big, clear ice cubes.
