In what used to be Ynot Wine Bar, La Carnita is hurling out tacos and tostadas since late August last year. Food wise, they’re true to their topic with moreish dishes with the spices spot on. But from a cocktail slant, they have some work to do - up the ice game, get the bartenders activated even if it’s a slow news night (get them creative!) and find your cocktail kingpin (Margaritas wouldn’t be a too far-fetched idea, or no?) to build the hype around.
If you’re in Dubai Marina looking for a waterhole with decent food, and you’re not particularly fussy when it comes to your cocktails - go here, enjoy proper Mexican food and treat yourself to some bona fide Tequila.
Atmosphere: 5/8
With big murals picturing the mafia among other things, this place has a certain feel to it that strikes a tone of authenticity. It may well be that it’s nothing like Mexico at all, but the theme seems well executed. The bar however needs some more attention to go all the way as cocktail bar.
Cocktails: 5/8
Up to the mark cocktails with small twists bringing in the Mexican smells and flavors.
Bartenders: 6/8
Competent bartenders that unfortunately at times lack guests enough for them to lose focus on the ones that are there - a few inquisitive questions later and by that a more attentive bartender, it turns out that he used to work in old-time favorite the Cocktail Kitchen, which is always a good start.
Ice: 4/8
Small ice cubes that adulterates the cocktails faster than they can be imbibed - while they still showcase big, clear ice cubes on their webpage. Walk the talk, guys!
