The cocktail dandy

One man and his quest to find the best
cocktail bar in Dubai

Who is the cocktail dandy?

Based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, The Cocktail Dandy has consistently and relentlessly visited bars and imbibed cocktails for more than three years in order to find the best cocktail bar. The reviews, that can be found in full length here, or in a condensed version on Instagram (@thecocktaildandy) are all following the same modus operandi - grades between 0 and 8 are given in four categories:

  • Atmosphere

  • Cocktails

  • Bartender

  • Ice

Even though he has spent more time in bars than most, his day to day life is far away from the glamorous cocktail endeavors. He still manages to unite his professional life with the world of cocktails through the holy trinity of hospitality, authenticity and passion.

The Cocktail Dandy does not get paid for his reviews, and there is no sponsored content neither on this web page, nor on the Instagram account.

Cocktails

The Cocktail Dandy likes his cocktails boozy, straight and oldskool. Hence we are talking Negroni, Old Fashioned, Sazerac, Bombardier, Boulevardier, Horse’s Neck, and so on. Generally speaking, when visiting a bar for a review, the order will always look the same:

  1. Negroni - equal parts Gin, Campari and Sweet Vermouth, ice and an orange zest.
A bartender struggling with this one will have a hard time making it anywhere in the world.

  2. Old Fashioned - 60 ml Bourbon, 1 sugar cube, 3 dashes of Angostura Bitters, ice, orange zest and a Maraschino cherry.
Discussions held regarding Bourbon or Rye, different kinds of cocktail cherries and which Bitters is the best all vouch for bonus points to the bartender.

  3. Sazerac - 30 ml Rye Whiskey, 30 ml Cognac, 1 sugar cube, 1 dash Peychaud’s Bitters, 1 dash Angostura Bitters, Absinthe and a lemon peel
Free the nerds; what is the quintessential Sazerac, which Rye Whiskey is the best and do you go for both Angostura and Peychaud’s Bitters?

After this, the sky is the limit - each review will be based on these three alone, while there may be instances where more drinks are ordered.
